Who’s Who? – NFL Stars and The Boys

The most important part about blogging is writing about topics that your audience cares about, so let’s combine the most popular sport in the United States with my favorite show, America’s too probably. At least among those of us old enough to watch it.

I want to start with the disclaimer that characters in The Boys do some pretty effed up stuff, and in no way I am claiming that these NFL players do anything along those lines. In fact, all of these NFL players are much better people than the characters in The Boys. I am really just comparing their powers.

Hughie Campbell is…

Stefon Diggs

Throughout the show, Hughie Campbell represents the moral compass of the team, as he is constantly pushing back against Butcher’s need to destroy all of the Supes. It does take a turn for Hughie once he discovers the Temp V, giving him teleportation powers and turning him into a real d-bag towards his girl, Annie. Behavior aside, Hughies teleportation is reminiscent of touchdown threat, Stefon Diggs. When Bills QB, Josh Allen, heaves a deep ball downfield, Diggs always appears out of nowhere to turn what the defense thought would be an easy pick by the safety into a miraculous touchdown.

Starlight is…

Patrick Mahomes

Explosiveness…Starlight and Patrick Mahomes are the most electric characters of their worlds. Starlight is the middle-America, poster-child superhero that girls want to be and guys want to be with, the same way that the $500-million-dollar Chiefs QB is the face of the NFL. Starlight quickly rose to the top of the Seven, and Mahomes burst onto the scene and immediately established himself atop the NFL. From anywhere on the field, with his arm or his legs, Mahomes can score a touchdown. Those throws are not even limited to just his right arm.

Billy Butcher is…

Aaron Donald

In worlds of super-powered maniacs or athletic freaks, it is not easy to stand out from the rest of the pack. Billy Butcher, as a mere mortal, regularly put his body on the line against the most powerful Supes that Vought could throw at him, coming away from it all with barely a scratch. Aided now by Temp V, Butcher is hurtling towards a colossal showdown with the baddest of the bad. Coming out of the draft, many critics worried that Donald was undersized for his position and would be manhandled by NFL O-linemen. Little did they know, Donald was a specimen of his own and became the most dominant defensive force of his generation.

A-Train is…

Tyreek Hill

Speed kills…literally (think Episode 1). A-Train and Tyreek Hill have more speed than what they know what to do with, taunting foes and defenders alike. While A-Train has shown signs of slowing down, Tyreek Hill, on a massive new contract with the Dolphins, will want to keep things swimming along in Miami. Let’s see if Tua’s arm can keep up with Hill’s legs.

Black Noir is…

Davante Adams

Wide receivers are often known for being the flashiest players on the field. The same can be said for superheroes. Not the case with these two. Black Noir and Davante Adams prefer to let their work do the talking, putting up big numbers when it matters most. Other receivers might end up on SportsCenter more than Adams, but when you need to get the job done, there is no one more reliable at getting you the yards that you need.

Soldier Boy is…

Aaron Rodgers

Nobody is more talented than these two. Both have been at the top of their games, revered and respected by all, but after some supporting casts letting them down, they are once again in search of the mountaintop. Perhaps their best years are behind them, but with their pedigree, you cannot count them out just yet. Retooling with some new weapons, they will be leaving it all on the field to once again be the country’s leading man.

Homelander is…

Tom Brady

The Boys’ universe and the NFL have been dominated by two men for a very long time, Homelander and Tom Brady. They are America’s leading men, but are not without their own challenges. Their success leads many to hatred and jealousy, and while Homelander actually commits heinous acts, there are plenty of Jets, Bills, Dolphins, Colts, Broncos, Steelers, etc. fans (really only Bucs and Pats fans are excluded) that will feel that the way Tom Brady tortures their beloved franchises feels pretty similar. As the top dogs in their respective universes, there are always new challengers. Will they finally be unseated?
